Quotable Friday

There’s something about the snow that has always been magical to me, and it actually brightens my mood and warms me from within.

We’ve been basically stuck inside all week thanks to a good amount of snow that NC is not used to! It’s been very nice to get a lot of things done, particularly getting things in order for another full weekend of working at the house.  Be sure to follow me on Instagram to keep up with all that will be happening!

Have a happy weekend! :)

How to Paint an Iron Clawfoot Tub

It’s actually way easier than I thought!

tub diy

When we decided to install a “baby” clawfoot tub in the upstairs guest bathroom, we found an old, very dirty, rusty tub that fit the bill.  We discussed several colors, but ultimately decided to keep it simple and go with black.  We figured it’s easier to change out shower curtains and bath linens than to repaint a tub!

Step 1: Clean out the inside, then flip the tub over to paint.  We used the shop vac to vacuum out all the dirt and dust, then Comet to clean.

Step 2: Scrape all the paint, rust, etc. that you can off the outside of the tub.  We used a wall scraper and sanding blocks, but you could also use a pumice stone.

Fun fact- the tub was made in August 1924.

Step 3: After the tub feels as smooth and even as possible, paint on a coat of Rustoleum primer.  We went with brown since we were painting a dark color.

Step 4: Once the primer has dried completely, paint with Rustoleum in your color choice.  We went with interior/exterior gloss black.  Add more coats as necessary.

See, I told you it was easy!

Next up, the master bathroom tub.  We’re going with a high-gloss white for this one.

A big thanks to my mom and mom-in-law for all your help with this project! :)

Making An Entrance

I think most people would agree that first impressions are pretty important.  Well, your house should be no different.  That’s why we want our foyer to really shine.  It’s not there yet, but it’s well on its way!

Let me refresh your memory with a few before photos of this room.

And here it is now.

Not too bad, huh?  We chose to go with a neutral in this room, and settled on Glidden’s Kitten White.  All of the trim is stark white.  If you look closely at the trim, you’ll notice we added a little more dimension by painting the flats the same color as the walls.

Remember those nasty carpeted stairs?

Well they got a facelift too!  We pulled up the carpet, and painted the trim and spindles.

You can see that we’ve still got some work today, but I’m so happy with how it’s all coming together.  We will need to refinish the floors eventually, but for now, they are going to get a light sanding and a couple of coats of urethane.  We had to make budget cuts somewhere, so the floors lost that battle.  Luckily, only a few rooms truly need it.  Plus I’m planning to add a stair runner, which will cover up a lot of the ugly spots.

We’ve also picked out a gorgeous flush mount basket chandelier to hang in the foyer, and it should match the dining room chandelier perfectly.  We decided to go with flush mount so that we could have a Christmas tree in the center of the foyer if we chose to.  It will look something like this, but with about a 14″ diameter.

shoppingMost of all, I’m just happy that atrocious 70’s green trim is gone!  Don’t the pocket doors look so chic in white?!

In other news, tile is moving along in the two full guest bathrooms.

And we’ve decided on wallpaper for the dining room.  Sorry, no sneak peeks just yet…I have to keep some things a surprise!

Countdown to our homeowner’s insurance start date: 10 days!!

The Sunday Currently, #15

Happy Sunday Funday!  I sure enjoyed a 4 day week with a little snow thrown in last week.  I know I’m a freak…I love the cold.

I stayed with my brother and almost sis-in-law last night at their new place.  They just got some chickens yesterday, which has been a lot of fun for the three of us.  There are 3 chickens, so we each picked a name.  I picked Louise, Liz picked Greta, and Jason named his (female) chicken Carl.  Seems normal enough.  We also got an egg this morning…it was yummy.

Thinking– How much I’m liking my navy nails! After dress shopping, we went for mani’s yesterday and I decided to go with the navy theme we’re using in the office.  I usually stick to nude or gray, but I’m liking this new color!

Smelling– Deliciousness at the local co-op market this morning.

Wishing– That The Walking Dead would come back to Sundays already.  In the meantime, I’m enjoying this little story.  It’s about warding off vampires, but I think it would work well for zombies too.

Hoping– My rebranding goes well.  After the positive response from last week’s Currently, I’ve decided to go forward with the redesign.  I’ve partnered with a very talented designer, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with!!

Wearing– My new Tory Burch boots!  I got them in November, and the swelling in my ankle has finally gone down enough to wear them! :)

Loving– All the wedding planning I’ve been getting to do lately! I was so delighted when my future sis asked me to be her matron of honor, and the planning has been so fun.  Yesterday Liz, my mom, and I went wedding dress shopping, and today we are headed to the bridal show at The Carolina Inn.  (I actually went to this show two years ago and won my wedding stationary! Fingers crossed for another lucky day!)

Wanting– Some hubby time.  I’ve been gone since Friday night and I am missing that guy!

Feeling– Full!  My bro is a pretty incredible chef, and between dinner last night and breakfast this morning, I’m stuffed!

Clicking– This crafter’s checklist. Are you fully stocked?  I might need to make a run to Michael’s soon!! ;)
